"Tradução, Simbolismo, Escrita, Oralidade, Diáspora". by Francisco Cota Fagundes.

Mau Tempo no Canal de Vitorino Nemésio: Tradução, Simbolismo, Escrita, Oralidade, Diaspora, is composed of six essays that address, among others, the themes announced in the subtitle. The first article discusses the translational theory and translational experiences that governed the translation into English, made by the author, of the Nemésio novel. The second essay deals with the rich symbolism that shapes the main work of Vitornino Nemésio's fiction, particularly in what it relates to diseases and their metaphorical dimension. The Great Western Tradition - literary, musical, pictorial - is the focus of the third essay of the book. The remaining studies focus on various aspects of the representation of orality in the author's novel, whose history, although ostensibly linked to aristocratic and bourgeois classes, is also an extraordinary example as regards to the representation of the lower classes and their oral traditions. The proposed readingof the representation of orality in the novel allows us to look at Mau Tempo no Canal from a new ideological angle. As the last chapter demonstrates, in this novel Vitorino Nemésio didn't neglect a subject that, as Azorean writer he was, could not fail to interest him: the Azorean diaspora of North America in its drama, adventure and opportunity to exercise the propensity of the novelist to tell more stories.
